Al-Jazairi Palace

Dummar, Damascus, Syria
Prince Abdul Kader Al-Jazairi is Algeria’s national hero who fought against the French invasion of his country.

He was exiled from Algeria by the French in 1855 and took Damascus as his new home.

The outskirts of Damascus, where River Barada enters the city, reminded him of his hometown in Algeria so he built his summer palace there.

Prince Abdul Kader played an important political role in Damascus especially in the Events of 1860 when he saved many people by sheltering them at this very palace.

He passed away in 1883 and was laid to rest in Damascus until the 1960s when his body was moved to Algeria.

Although the recently renovated palace serves now as a government building, one of its room has been designated as a small museum about the Prince.
Historical Periods: Ottomans
