Damascus Citadel

Al-Hamidiya, North Western Corner of the Old City , Damascus, Syria
Damascus citadel is located on the north western corner of the old city forming part of its ancient wall.

Its fortifications date back to the end of the 12th century during the reign of Salah Eddine.

Further fortifications were added later in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods.

Although it is built on a flat ground and is not as overwhelming as the other citadels in Syria, Damascus citadel has served very well in defending the city against the Crusaders and prevented them from ever invading it.
Historical Periods: Ayyubids, Mamluks
