The main buildings of Damascus University were built as army barracks in 1910 under the Ottoman governor of Damascus Nazem Pasha.

In 1923 during the French Mandate, the buildings were turned into the main premises of Damascus University, which at that time included the faculties of law and medicine and the institute for Arabic studies and archaeology.
