The Ottomans

Cross Roads of Civilisations

The Ottomans rose to power at the beginning of the 14th century after taking over from the Seljuqs in Anatolia.

At the height of their empire in the 16th and 17th century, the Ottomans controlled big parts of Europe, Africa and Asia.

They defeated the Mamluks in the early 16th century to rule Syria for 400 years until the early 20th century.

The Ottomans have occupied Syria for four centuries, and that period had definitely left its mark on Syrian architecture. An example of this architectural influence can be seen at Habib al-Najjar Mosque in Antioch, a major Syrian city which is still to date under Turkish occupation.
