The Phoenicians

Cross Roads of Civilisations

The Phoenicians or the Canaanites are the indigenous population who had settled the Syrian coastline since at least the 3rd millennium BC.

These trade masters conquered the world’s seas and are believed to have reached the Americas two thousand years before Columbus’s alleged discovery.

The remains of the Phoenician city of Amrit, which dates back to the 3rd millennium BC, can be seen today on the outskirts of the city of Tartous on the Syrian coastline.
