The Hellenistic Period in Syria started in 333 BC when Alexander the Great defeated the Persians, who in the 5th century BC had annexed big parts of Syria.

The Hellenistic Period continued until 64 BC when the Romans took over Syria.

Afamia

Dating back to 300 BC, Afamia, or Apamea, was a major Hellenistic city. Its amazing remains can be seen today next to the Orontes river 50km to the north west of the city of Hama.
