The Salihiya Quarter

What Is?

The Salihiya Quarter was constructed as a suburb of Damascus during the 12th century, when the city outgrew its ancient wall.

The quarter is located about 2km to the north of the Old City on the edge of Mount Kaseyoun. Numerous monuments that documents the history of Damascus can be still seen today in the Salihiya Quarter.

The Salihiya Quarter and Damascus

As can be seen in this early 20th century photo, the Salihiya Quarter remained an independent suburb of Damascus Old City with dense orchards separating the two for around 800 years. Not until the second half of the 20th century did the Salihiya Quarter become part of the city thanks to the explosion in population growth that has characterised modern Damascus.
