Aramaeans are the indigenous population who had settled inner Syria and, by the 12th century BC, had formed a number of highly sophisticated city states.

Damascus was one of the most powerful city state at the time.

Their language Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ, is still spoken today in some of the villages around Damascus.

Maloula is an ancient Aramaean village situated 50km to the north of Damascus. Its inhabitants both Christians and Muslims still to date speak Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ.
