Al-Marjeh Square

Al-Hejaz, Damascus, Syria
This square is called “Marjeh” or “Pasture” in Arabic because horses used to graze in it just outside the walls of Damascus Old City.

The square is also known as the Martyrs Square because many Syrian nationalists opposing the Ottoman occupation were executed there in 1916.
Historical Periods: Ottomans
