Al-Marjeh Square

Al-Hejaz, Damascus, Syria
Marjeh, or “Pasture” in Arabic, is the name given to this important square because it was built on what was once an open pasture on the outskirts of the Old City Wall.

It is also known as the “Martyrs’ Square” because many Syrian nationalists opposing the Ottoman occupation of Syria were executed there in 1916.
Historical Periods: Ottomans
