The Hellenistic Period

Cross Roads of Civilisations

The Hellenistic Period in Syria started at the hands of Alexander the great in 333 B.C. with the defeat of the Persians, who had annexed big parts of Syria since the 5th century B.C.

The Hellenistic Period continued in Syria until 64 B.C. when the Romans took it over.

The remains of the wonderful Hellenistic city of Aphamia (or Apamea), which dates back to 300 BC, are situated next to the Orontes River 50km to the northwest of the city Hama.
