The Hellenistic Period

Cross Roads of Civilisations

The Hellenistic Period in Syria started in 333 BC when Alexander the Great defeated the Persians, who had annexed big parts of Syria in the 5th century BC.

The Hellenistic Period continued until 64 BC when the Romans took over Syria.

The remains of the wonderful Hellenistic City of Aphamia (or Apamea), which dates back to 300 BC, are situated next to the Orontes River 50km to the northwest of the City of Hama.
