They are an essential part of Damascene heritage as the city had always been a major trade hub.

Moreover, Khans were a vital testimony to the economic, social, historical, artistic and political life of Syrian cities.

They flourished throughout the Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods.

This out of city Ottoman khan is located in the fertile Ghab valley 50km to the north west of the city of Hama. It gives a fine example of out-of-town khans that were built all over Syria.
