The Events of the 1860

What Is?

The Events of the 1860 started with sectarian violence in Mount Lebanon that quickly spilled over to Damascus, where most of the Christian Quarter in the Old City was razed to the ground.

Many of the Christian inhabitants that suffered from the violence were saved by their Muslim neighbours and most notably by Prince Abdul Kader Al-Jazairi.

Saving the Christians of Damascus

This 1861 oil on canvas painting by Jan-Baptist Huysmans depicts the Christians of Damascus paying thanks to Prince Abdul Kader Al-Jazairi for the great chivalry he had shown in the Events of 1860. A copy of the painting is on display in Al-Jazairi Palace.
