What Is?

The Salihiya Quarter was constructed as a suburb of Damascus at around the 12th century, when the Walled Old City got too crowded for its inhabitants.

The Salihiya Quarter and Damascus

As can be seen in this early 20th century photo, the Salihiya Quarter remained as an independent suburb of Damascus Old City with dense orchards separating the two for around 800 years. Not until the second half of the 20th century did the Salihiya Quarter become part of the City thanks to the explosion in population growth that has characterised modern Damascus.
