Nour Eddine Zengi

Nour Eddine Zengi (1118 – 1174) gave Damascus many of its 12th century monuments.

The wise Seljuqs King ruled his empire from Damascus and defended the city against the Crusaders.

Nour Eddine Zengi took over from his father after the latter died during the siege of this castle on the Euphrates river 50km to the west of the city of Raqqa. Later on, Nour Eddine took over Jaabar Castle and refortified it himself.
